 Cleaning Instructions

Aluminum Miniblinds

Use ordinary soft, clean dust cloths, chemically treated dust cloths, vacuum cleaner brush attachments, or other available ordinary household aids. The paint surface of the slats is quite smooth and dust is easily brushed off if done at regular intervals.

To vacuum, use the brush dust head attachment and tilt the slats first up, then down (but not entirely exposed) to reach the entire top and bottom surfaces

To dust, use a soft clean cloth or chemically treated dust cloth and tilt the slats as above.

To wash, use a damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent. Use warm or cold water - NOT hot water. Tilt the slats as above. Protect the floor or sill from excess water. The blind can also be taken down, placed in a bath tub of mild soapy water, then rinsed clean, wiped dry, or allowed to dry completely in the open air.

Additional Option for Aluminum or Vinyl

Take them down. Remove the tabs at the top and they just slide forward. It is easier to clean them 2 or 3 at a time. Take the blinds to your bathtub and lay them down in the tub. Using hot water, fill the tub to just over the blinds. Put 1/2 cup of degreaser into the hot water. Let the blinds soak for about 10 to 20 minutes. Agitate the water every once in a while. Hold the top of the blinds and lift in and out of the water.

If there is still gunk on the blinds it should wipe right off thanks to the degreaser. You should put on some gloves and wipe each blade of the blinds down, or a washcloth would work.

After you have done that you should drain all of the dirty water and rinse off the blinds with warm water. Then stand them on their end for a few minutes, so excess water will drain off.

Re-hang your blinds and carefully pull the slats apart. Let them hang all the way down for a little while so they can finish air drying. Now you are back in business.

Wood Blinds

Care must be taken when cleaning real wood blinds. Washing the blind is NOT recommended. Although the wood is sealed, water or even excessive dampness may cause warp age or discoloration of the slats. Since the surface of the slats is smooth, dust may be easily brushed off at regular intervals using a clean soft dust cloth or a vacuum cleaner brush attachment. Clean them as described above.

Fabric Pleated Shades
Most of the cellular shades, like the Hunter Douglas Duette shade, are anti-static, and they require very little cleaning. A light sweep with your vacuum cleaner brush attachment is all that is needed to keep them dust free. For a more thorough cleaning, the entire shade assembly may be gently wiped with a soft damp cloth using lukewarm (not hot) water.

Take special care when handling opaque (blackout) shades to avoid creasing, and do not immerse them in water. For tough stains, spot clean with a mild detergent. Some shades, like the Graber Crystal Pleat have a "soft hand" fabric. Be very careful when trying to clean these types of shades as they tend to "pill".

From contemporary to traditional, Skyline™ Gliding Window Panels set a new standard in modern window fashions providing a sophisticated look to match today's urban design influence. Skyline window panels feature a wide range of fashion forward fabrics, offered in five distinctive categories, a patented innovative hardware system and custom colored hardware designed to coordinate with each fabric in the collection.

Cleaning Decorative Cloth Tapes or Edge Binding

Horizontal blinds can be ordered with decorative cloth ladders. Bamboo shades or woven wood shades sometimes will also have a fabric edge binding. Here are some simple ways to clean these fabrics if they get dirty.

First, if the decorative tapes have a shine or luster do not get them wet. The material could be rayon or acetate. If these materials get wet they could water stain.

Second, we recommend when cleaning any fabric to first test it by cleaning an area that will not be visible. Try the area of the decorative tape that wraps around the bottom rail of the window blinds or on the street side of the window shades.

Ways to Clean Fabric Tapes

100% polyester tapes can be spot cleaned. In order to spot clean decorative tapes or edge binding, use fabric cleaning wipes found at any grocery store. They will typically not leave a stain or discolor the fabric.

Another method of spot cleaning decorative tapes is with cool distilled water and a clean white cloth. Hold the tape, supporting it, and gently blot the stained area of the fabric. Let the decorative tapes air dry. If the stain will not come out with just water, gentle fabric cleaner may be used as well.
